After many years of traveling to various parts of the world, we realized that we kept making the same mistakes. While these mistakes seemed impossible to avoid at first, we started analyzing what went wrong.
We always spend a lot of time reading reviews and choosing places and experiences with the best ratings and reviews. BUT, be aware! Here's why: We have learned that good reviews don't necessarily guarantee good experiences. This can be due to a couple of reasons:
- Some reviews are based on specific aspects of the experience, for example, a restaurant with mediocre food might receive a 5/5 rating because of perfect service, location, or how visually appealing the food looks on Instagram. While this reasoning is not flawed, it needs to be specified and valued.
- Some reviews are "paid for" We have been to restaurants where a free dessert is offered in exchange for a 5-star rating. Similarly, some hotels try to compensate for subpar facilities by offering upgrades if guests complain. While this might seem like good customer service, it can also be a clever tactic for hotels and others to make guests feel they are getting more, thereby securing a positive review. However, many guests dislike spending time and energy complaining, and hotels, etc., should deliver exactly what was promised in the first place.
- Reviews are subjective. While this isn't surprising, it's often forgotten. People from one country may have a specific taste for certain things that are disliked by people from other countries. Our reviews are also subjective, but we always strive to be open and descriptive about why we like or dislike what we review.
...But why does this make our blog perfect for you?
We invest a lot of energy in avoiding tourist traps! When we travel, we seek authentic experiences. Planning a trip to Italy and craving authentic pasta? That's great, but if you rely solely on TripAdvisor or Google reviews, you might be influenced by the factors mentioned above.
